Controversial isn’t exactly how I’d describe this blog. Still, some people didn’t like it when I said meditation is as easy as breathing, in the previous part of this A to Z Guide to Meditation.
They’ll like what I have to say about chakras even less.
Here goes anyway…
Stop playing around with your higher chakras
Yes, that’s right. I’m advising you to stop focussing on your top three chakras.
Don’t get me wrong. I do love the throat chakra, third eye and crown chakra. They represent beautiful, powerful and valuable parts of our spiritual existence.
But that’s where the trouble starts.
When some people hear about these chakras being centres of willpower, manifestation, intuition, clairvoyance, and last but not least, their connection to God and the Universe, well, let’s just say they get a bit starry-eyed.
They think that by working hard on developing their higher chakras, they’ll become an amazingly spiritual person. In the process they neglect their lower chakras.
As a result they become like that statue the King of Babylon saw in his dreams: a head of gold, breast and arms of silver, belly and thighs of brass, legs of iron and feet of clay.
Sure, the top looks pretty impressive. But the foundation is fatally weak.
Start building from the bottom up
They may not have the same spiritual glamour as their upstairs neighbours. But trying to bypass your lower chakras is a decidedly bad idea. Energy has to flow upwards through them: from the bottom up to your heart chakra in the middle and to the higher chakras.
Ignoring them and favouring the higher chakras in hopes of supercharging your spiritual abilities is like wanting to go full throttle with the brakes on.
Chakras are sphere-like vortices whose job it is to distribute energy throughout your body.
Emotional obstacles in our lower chakras – and believe me, most of us have them – will disrupt the entire flow of energy.
If you then start playing around with your higher chakras, you will throw yourself out of balance. Even though you might feel pretty groovy at first.
Know the kind of people who always have their head in the clouds but don’t actually seem to be going somewhere in life? A classic case of lower chakra denial syndrome.
Give this meditation exercise a try
Sit down and relax. Breathe. We’ll focus on your first four chakras one by one.
Your base chakra sits at the bottom of your spine, where your body touches the ground. Visualise it as a spinning, glowing red sphere.
Feel how this orb-like vortex of warm red light and energy fuses you with the Earth. Your legs and backside might become a bit heavy or vague, as it becomes increasingly unclear where your body ends and the Earth begins.
Make this chakra’s colour bright, pure, lovely and warm. In reality there might be dark spots where the energy is weak. But your intention of beauty and purity will help in healing this.
Now visualise a red and orange flow of energy from your base chakra to your second chakra, the sacral chakra.
This spinning orange sphere is located near your sacrum, in your pelvic area. The pelvis is a central part of your body and in a lot of people it’s much too rigid.
I’m not saying you have to develop Elvis-like flexibility there. But do allow for more freedom and movement in your pelvis. See yourself moving graciously, while your orange sacral chakra spins and shines brightly and happily.
Or if you’re bold enough, get up and actually move your pelvis and your hips. Dance! Not some spastic techno dance of course. But with slow, deliberate and flowing movements, originating in your pelvis and spreading out from there to the rest of your body.
Again, make the orange colour of this chakra as bright, happy and healthy as you can.
Moving on to your third chakra, visualise a flow of orange and yellow energy to your solar plexus, located somewhere behind and slightly above your belly button.
Your solar plexus chakra is like a bright yellow sun radiating with happy energy throughout your entire body and filling the room.
If at this point you’re becoming a bit light in the head or you feel like floating, then try bringing the fusion of your red base chakra and the flexibility of your orange sacral chakra into the equation.
Now gently and flowingly connect the energy and colours of all three of these chakras with your heart chakra, a glowing sphere of radiant green energy that fills your mind and your body with pure love and peaceful joy.
Enjoy this feeling for a while. Give yourself permission to just be, without having to do anything.
Slowly let the feeling fade – don’t worry about the energy, it’ll still be there.
Bring your attention back to your body, starting with your legs and the soles of your feet. Wiggle your toes if you need to.
Shift your attention to your hands. They might feel warm or tingly. Open and close your hands a couple of times. Finally, touch your face with your hands, as you do when you wipe the fatigue from it. This should bring you back firmly to the present moment.
Feeling ready to take on the world right now?
