Oh my. What a frightfully non-fashionable word. But it’s not too late yet. We can still save devotion and transplant it into the 21st century.
Even the dictionary is on our side. Because it says that the first meaning of devotion is: love, loyalty, or enthusiasm for a person or activity.
So the next question is: who or what should you be devoted to? And the answer is… (drum roll please):
You, and your dreams!
It may sound a bit odd at first. But it makes perfect sense. Because if you don’t love or care about yourself and your dreams, who else on this earth will?
Guess what everyone else is devoted to? Themselves and their own dreams of course. Even if they’re the most loving and caring person on the planet whose mission in life is to help each and every living creature. They’ll still be devoted to their dream of healing the world.
Won’t I become egocentric?
No, you won’t. Not if you do it right anyway.
Devotion is not about caring only about yourself. It’s about loving yourself in the first place.
Like what they tell you in those safety briefings on an airplane flight. Put on your own oxygen mask before helping others.
You have to be completely devoted to yourself and to your dreams and ambitions. Or call it your life’s purpose if that sounds better to you. Only then will you be fully equipped and strong enough to be of any meaningful service to others.
Devotion is a three stage rocket
Okay, so we’ve established that devotion is not a dirty word. Let’s have a look at the three components that make up devotion, shall we?
LOVE is the first stage.
How do you love yourself? We could write an entire book about that, but let’s settle on the single most important step towards self-love: accepting yourself and your past for what they are.
Your past is nothing more than the road you have traveled so far. Don’t like where the path has brought you at present? Then don’t waste your energy on regret or resentment. Instead, invest it in taking new and different decisions.
Base your decisions on the love you feel for yourself. The actions you undertake as a result will bend your path in a more loving and positive direction.
LOYALTY is the second stage. It means staying true to yourself.
Our world is full of distractions. They come in all shapes and sizes but they all have one thing in common: they want to make you deviate off the course you’re devoted to.
Giving in to distraction is being unfaithful to yourself. It’s a betrayal of the love you should be fostering towards yourself and your dreams.
ENTHUSIASM is the third stage. Or maybe we should call it the fuel of your devotion rocket. Enthusiasm is a relatively easy way to fuel your passion.
The excitement and the power of enthusiasm will overrule any fears or insecurities you might have about your ability to perform and deliver.
Can’t feel enthusiastic about your dreams and ambitions? Then look deeper. It simply means you haven’t found your real dreams yet. The ones you can truly feel devoted to. The ones you consider to be your purpose in life.
Or maybe the dreams aren’t yet real enough in your mind?
Either way, meditation can help you fix that.
Ready for lift-off?
Meditation is a form of devotion. Devotion to yourself and to your Big Dreams in life. At the same time meditation also helps to build and reinforce your devotion to You.
Which comes first? Like the whole chicken and egg thing, the question is irrelevant. It’s an ongoing process and it doesn’t matter where it once started or where it’ll end.
So simply do it. Meditate. In the name of Love, Loyalty and Enthusiasm.
In the name of devotion to You, your Dreams, and your True Potential. Amen.
