We all have them: memories that we’d much rather forget. Because we feel they’re too painful, too embarrassing or just plain awkward.
How we wish we could go back and change the past sometimes. Did you ever catch yourself thinking: “If only I had known back then what I know now…“?
I know I have. It’s a tempting thought. And it makes for a very sweet daydream.
Imagine that somehow your mind as it is now could travel back in time. Let’s say to your childhood or adolescence. And imagine your present mind – with all its knowledge and all its memories – would merge with your past self.
Just think of the mistakes and bad decisions you could avoid! All the emotional pain you could save yourself.
Sweet and tempting as it may sound, I don’t think I’d ever want to engage in that kind of time travel (you know, if it was possible). Why not? Because I’d be very scared to screw up the good stuff too!
By altering the not so nice parts of my past I would undoubtedly change my entire life path. By changing one thing I might also be closing a few other doors. Ones that lead to those events I wouldn’t want not to happen. Or to those special people who are a very dear part of my life right now.
You’d be fixing one bad memory and end up ruining your entire life. You wouldn’t want that to happen, would you?
The full package
Fantasy and science fiction stories aside, there’s an even more important reason why you shouldn’t want to lose the memories you don’t like.
All of your past experiences – the good, the bad and the ugly – have made you who you are today. Denying part of that is denying part of yourself.
By wanting to chip away a part of yourself, you are taking away part of your power too. And that’s a dreadful thing to do to yourself. Not to mention a draining waste of energy.
I know it sounds like a cliché, but there’s some truth in the old saying that everything happens for a reason.
Accept the full package of who you are and where you’ve been. It’s the only way forward.
It may (and probably will) take some healing – of the emotional or spiritual kind. But you’ll be a stronger person because of it.
